Bill’s new website revealed.

August 2nd, 2007 by Chris

My friend Bill is creating a new website. I’ve never seen it. In fact I’m not even sure what it’s going to be about, although considering the trend of the current site I suspect traffic or some other road-geek related field. I could be wrong, but I think I’m right. Why? Because I had a vision of Bill’s new website in my dreams last night. Yes. Really.

So to Bill if you think my website vision is cool, feel free to use it, that way I get to say I foresaw it in a dream. Self-fulfilling prophecy and all. If anybody else wants to use it, well it’s going to cost you.

So about my dream (or the website, or both):

I can’t remember what the name was but it was “The” followed by a single noun. Like “The Zone” or “The Grid”* or something like that. It had a sort-of light grey text on dark-medium blue theme, with the coolest title-banner graphic flash thing I have ever experienced (it was a dream after all).
I remember it quite vividly: It was a geographic view of North America (think green plains and brown and white mountains against the dark blue background ocean) as if you were in a space ship high above South America looking north… sort-of foreshortened by the viewing angle (the better to fit it in a narrow rectangle at the top of a website). The cool part was the animation: an overlay of aircraft or perhaps vehicle traffic patterns as sort of yellowish-white meteor clumps moving from point to point. The freakishly cool part was that it had a sort-of cursor controlled magnifying glass that you could put over some part of the image and zoom in on the wispy traffic motes. I know I didn’t really make this animation up, as it is surely inspired by artsy traffic visualizations.

I suppose it’s probably a bad sign of something that I’m dreaming about web site design… I was up late last night trying to widgetize the blog’s theme, but it’s not finished yet. And hey… look at that, I’ve stayed up until tomorrow again. I should sleep more.

* Out of curiousity’s sake: TheGrid.com is some kind of a…um… nightclub. TheGrid.net and TheGrid.org are unoccupied. TheZone.com is a seemingly professional website with really unprofessional goofy sounds and graphics. TheZone.org is a defunct Kansas City music review site. TheZone.net timed out.

Joe’s Mom dreamed of this house before we found it ourselves. Seriously. She told us all about it. Then after we closed and she came to help clean and move in she almost collapsed onto a packing box, “This is it! This is the house I dreamed!”

And, yeah … I don’t think I’d trust the Wealth Management services of “The Zone.com.” They might decide to invest all the money in butterfly nets or something, just out of whimsy.

Finally, been thinking it’d be cool to have a Random Picture of the Day on my blog, like what you have. But not sure how to code it. My online photos reside mostly in Picasa Web albums, if that matters. Want to figure it out for me?

That sounds way to technically intensive for me, ‘O Chris, although as the website will be geographically themed at times, it would be cool to have postings available for mouseover on a map, sort of the way Flickr has a geotagging tool for its photos.

Alas, the new website will not appear as dreamt. The text color is right, but the background color is wrong (at the moment, maybe I’ll change?). I’ll be deploying in a few weeks and inviting friends to torture test it then.
