Nate Decides to Walk

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Yes, as of this weekend Nate has decided he doesn’t need to hold our hands to walk anymore. We knew it was going to happen any time… check out the video (about 6MB)…

We took Nate to the beach on Friday. This wasn’t his first trip to the beach, but the first time the weather was horrible and he was so small we didn’t get him near the water.

This time he played everywhere:

the dry soft sand…
Sand between the fingers

the wet smooshy sand…

splashing at the thin edges of the waves…
Splashing in the ocean

watching the waves come in…

and wading in “deep”.

All of which culminated in some fantastic Daddy assisted body surfing.

Another beautiful moth.

At the Davis’ camp near Unity, ME, I found this beautiful moth. It was quite docile as you can see.

I believe it is a female Polyphemus Moth – Antheraea polyphemus (Hodges # 7757). BugGuide Moth Photographers Group The male has much larger (furrier) antenna.

Nate also played in the ocean, but I’ll want to write more on that later.

Additional vacation pictures are on the gallery.

Happy 1st Birthday!

Monday, May 26th, 2008

We had lots of family and friends at the house to celebrate Nathan’s first birthday yesterday. The house is quiet again now (or at least as quiet as normal) so I have time to put up some pictures.

Oh yeah, I’m there.

So just a few minutes ago I stopped Nate from spreading Cheerios all over the dining room. A moment later I realized that I had one stuck to the bottom of my sock. I pulled it off and without thinking… I ate it.

I mentioned this to K and she said: “Welcome to parenthood.”

Nate Meets Ice Cream

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Kahlua Fudge Ice Cream to be exact. Nate had his first visit to Kimberly’s Ice Cream over the weekend.

After a few small spoonfuls, K decided to go for broke and offered him her cone.

So he bit down on it.

He got baby brain freeze.

So he quickly learned to lick.

Happy First Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Nate and I helped Kristin celebrate her first Mother’s Day. Nate had some fun with chalk on the driveway (I helped a little).

It’s been a while since I actually made a post here, so I thought I’d use today’s nap time to do just that. Not a real lot going on here other than just day to day stuff, so it may not be real exciting.

I took Nate to the doctor yesterday. He’s had a cold and a very runny nose for several days now, and after waking up many time screaming on Monday night, I was quite sure that he had an ear infection. He most definitely did, so now he’s on an antibiotic. hopefully it will kick in today, and he’ll be a little less cranky.

Nate and I are taking a Music Together class on Friday mornings. it’s been a lot of fun for both of us. He gets to be around a group of kids his age, and I love to see him interact with them. He’s gotten out of the “babies are for eating” stage into the “I’m going to poke you in the eye” stage. lots of fun. He also seem to be enjoying the music. He gets excited when the jingle bells come out and he gets to play with them. So far a good experience.

Nate’s getting better at walking, and is almost ready to do it on his own. When we’re outside in the lawn, he walks everywhere, just using one hand to hold onto 1 of my fingers. Inside, he still prefers to hold on with both hands. I don’t think it will be long now before he’s walking on his own.

We’ve been spending a lot of time outside since the weather has turned nice. Nate enjoys it, and my gardens are starting to look pretty good because of it. Every time we walk around to look at the flowers, I pause to pull a weed or two. Even managed to trim the hedges the other day. hopefully I’ll be able to keep the weed pulling up all summer.

I’ve been doing more scrapbooking again recently. A couple of the moms I met thru the MOMS Club have been getting together fairly regularly in the evenings to scrap, and I’ve been joining them. I’ve been working on a simple photo album of Nate’s first year pictures. Just a regular 2-up 4×6 album that I’ve been making little 4×6 mini-pages to journal on about the accompanying photo. Goes quite quickly once I get momentum.

Well that’s about all I can think of right now. Gotta get back to the laundry. Maybe more to come soon, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Another great day.

Today started out sunny and warm and is finishing off with some T-storms and rain. It feels like summer for sure. Just in time for the likelihood of snow next week.

Nate got plenty messy feeding himself breakfast this morning.

K dropped me off on the course of the annual 4th of July Caz race. I’m training up for the 10 mile which is basically one lap around the lake. We backtracked about 5 1/2 miles from the finish and I started from there. I kept up a pretty good pace with right around 50 minutes. Not bad for the longest run of my life. I had made it up to 4.5 miles last year when my lung blew out. No pneumatic failures so far…

I met K in Lakeland Park (which is where the race finishes) and we had a bit of fun playing with Nate in the grass.

All in all, a fun day.

* When I look at Nate’s expression in this pic I experience one of those optical illusions where depending on your perception the box is either pointing up or down. I either see him screaming with joy, or the terrible grin of an attacking gargoyle.
