Contrasts in Space Fanfares

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

This is several years old, but for some reason it really makes me happy.

Falling with style indeed!

And as a contrast on the theme… This makes me laugh… but not in a happy way.
(Sound required as there isn’t really a picture.)

(Really blow your mind and play them both at the same time!!!)

A trusted voice is lost

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

I learned yesterday that career journalist Daniel Schorr has died at the age of 93. I am saddened and impacted by this news, and almost posted last night… but I struggled to find the right context.
This morning I learned that he had a long and distinguished career before I had ever listened to radio news. He joined NPR, which is where I’ve always heard him, in 1985… at the age of 69! To me, he’s always been “NPR Senior News Analyst Daniel Schorr ” but that was at least his third career in journalism.
In 1985, I was not even a teenager, and I’m sure my parents can validate that I would have had little interest in news (on the radio or otherwise) unless it involved complex aeronautical devices with flames shooting out of them. However, in the years that followed, riding in the car with my parents, or in the car by myself, and now daily drives to work; NPR and to some extent Daniel Schorr have been a constant part of my life. Just a few days ago, I listened to him discuss some subject I don’t even recall.
I cannot possibly attempt a commentary on this man, as I never really knew him, but I must note how he has always been a trusted and knowledgeable voice in my life. Not a parent or anything quite that influential, but just a constant. My condolences go out to his family and coworkers.

Thank-you for your years of dedication to journalism and reporting that clearly you loved so much. You will be missed.

Happy 0.5 Birthday!

Rachel’s Getting Bigger…

Rachel is in the extremely photogenic prop-up-and-look-around phase. Here are some pics.

4th of July Weekend

Monday, July 12th, 2010

I seem to be settling into a biweekly cycle of photo updates. That seems to be the threshold where I just can’t bear to leave all those images unlabeled and unprocessed.

So, for here is your reward for staying tuned.

First 4th of July:
K’s folks came out for the weekend. Grammy helped Nate decorate the big red wagon for the Teddy Bear Parade.

Rachel was decked out too.

We both ran in races on the 4th. K finished the 5k in 35:01 and was quite happy with that. I ran the 10 mile in 1:26:29. Considering the heat, that wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as last year. I felt pretty horrible down the last two miles, but finished without walking so it’s hard to complain.

After a quick party stop I played with the Cazenovia Community Band during the parade. We didn’t ride/march/move we just added ambiance by playing marches in the village park.[1]

FInally, that night we took Nate up to Stone Quarry hill to watch the fireworks and catch some fireflies.

After it was all over, we watched the phoenix[2] rise from the flames.

  1. Including Hogan’s Heroes March in what must have been a 6th grade arrangement. Oom-pah Oom-pah… []
  2. Or perhaps pterosaur. []
