Colorado Update

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

After a long day yesterday doing work in Rifle, Colorado, and then driving to Steamboat Springs, CO, I didn’t have time to post. I did have a lot of scenery to shoot along the way, so there are many pictures in the album.
In places the drive was isolated, but not particularly difficult or dangerous.

Today I stayed in Steamboat Springs working issues here, while coworkers headed up Emerald Mountain to service our equipment there. Gratuitous Colorado flag shot:

Highland Highway!

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Some of you may know that I’m currently in Colorado. I flew into Denver and needed to drive Interstate 70 to Rifle, Colorado. (208 mi for 3 hours and 22 minutes according to Google maps). I had planned on 4 hours with weather, but this was not sufficient. Ignoring stops it took about 5 hours to make the trip (ick).

ScienceDebate 2008

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

I’ve signed on as a supporter of ScienceDebate 2008. The concept is to get the presidential candidates to have a real debate about issues of science and technology.

Check it out. I encourage you to sign up too! Let’s tell our government that political dogma just doesn’t cut it anymore. We want a leader who can help us make the Unites States a world leader in technical innovation and scientific discovery.

Asleep

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Nate wouldn’t take a nap this morning, and the result was falling asleep about half an hour ago in his exersauscer. This is the first time he’s fallen asleep someplace odd.

Down for the count!

Comet 8P/Tuttle

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Although we’re a bit spoiled by the 17P/Holmes outburst, 8P/Tuttle is an attractive comet with an apparent green glow. Not quite naked-eye observable, but binoculars can spot it.

I knew about where it was from the sky charts and HNSKY, so I aimed the camera at 70mm and found the green dot in the image. I zoomed in and shot the image below. 1600 ISO for 8 seconds is about as far as I can push this image. Still, the green hue is obvious in the image without enhancement.

I need to get to work on that barn-door tracker. I particularly like this approach with the bent threaded rod.

Electoral Compass

I’ve seen a similar application in the past, this one is interesting because it appears to be European in origin.

As seen on digg:

Helping himself to the toy box

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

We’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with Nate’s surplus of Christmas toys… but he’s taking it rather well.

Here he is helping himself to one of the toy boxes. He grabbed the box dragged it over and started taking out what he wanted.
