Fourth time’s the charm?

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

K & I had our third visit to Labor & Delivery at the hospital today. The first time involved IV fluids and a very late night. The second time was part of our Childbirth Class a few days later. Today’s visit was prompted by what we have diagnosed as a careless assistant at the doctor’s office.
To be fair, there may have been reason for concern. K had her regular Dr’s visit yesterday, and her blood pressure was higher than normal. This is the second appointment in a row where this has been true. Prenatal hypertension is not terribly unusual, but it can be a sign of more serious health issues for both mom and baby. So yesterday Dr What-Do-You-Think recommended that she return today to have her blood pressure checked again.
Today the measurement was almost 20 points higher than yesterday. Rather than checking again a few minutes later, the assistant (I’m not sure if they’re a nurse) called Dr. WDYT for a recommendation. He sent K over to Labor & Delivery. This was at about 1:30-2 o’ clock this afternoon.
After various tests (which were delayed or lost at least once) and a fairly busy (and therefore unattentive) staff on the L&D floor, I actually finished work before K was released. I met her at the hospital and she was finally OK’d to go by about 7:30. Of course, K hadn’t had anything to eat since a light lunch at 12 or so. Like she isn’t constantly hungry and exhausted enough already.
After we stopped for dinner and got home, K pretty much went straight to bed.
I’m sure she’ll feel better tomorrow, but lets hope we only need one more visit to L&D… and everything goes as planned.

Last nursery update

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

I sense the relief in some and the panic in others as this title is processed by their fleshy comparators. To those who seek the end, fear not, the construction is complete. TO those who want more, there will always be updates for the purpose of the room… if not the room itself. But enough stalling…
Nursery and Crib
Doesn’t the floor look great! In the sun it just glows. I’m so glad that we didn’t settle for anything less. It’s a solid 3/4″ prefinished northern maple hardwood floor. We got the middle grade for some extra color variation. The tone varies a bit more than I anticipated, but the wood is so warm and rich with beautiful grain that I’m very pleased with the complete look.
Painted doors
This view is looking the opposite direction highlighting the paint pattern that K designed for the raised panel doors.

I drove home…

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

I drove home tonight in the dark.
I drove home tonight in the dark and the rain with the headlights on high.
I drove fast.
The rain sparkled on the asphalt as each drop hit.
And shattered.
To flash briefly and disappear.

Some bounced.
Not hail, but rain.
The strange physics of water bouncing on water.
And asphalt.
And flashing light.
Arcing briefly.
So fast as to not be seen.
Except they are.
And then gone.

The splashes revealed.
Always there.
Only seen by the passing car.
The moving car.
The fast car.
Thousands of fans doing the wave.

Swollen Ankles

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I woke up this morning, looked down at my feet, and was completely surprised at how large my ankles and feet were. I actually wondered if I had managed to sprain my right ankle yesterday and just hadn’t noticed. It was easily the size of my knee. I kind of tentatively rolled it around, and there was no pain, just a whole lot of swelling. I tried to put my birkenstocks on, which are the only shoes I’ve been able to wear for a while now because of the swelling, and they were a real tight fit. Had to loosen the straps up a lot. I will be glad when this pregnancy side effect goes away.

Here’s a picture of my feet from this morning, and for comparison, the same shot from a year and a half ago.

Last weekend my good friend Karen threw Chris and I a brunch/baby shower at the Lincklaen House in Caz. Both of our parents were able to come into town for it, along with my grandfather. Many of our local friends were able to join us also. It was a very nice time.

Anyway, I have finally got around to looking at the pictures and getting them posted. They can be found in the gallery.

Pregnancy Update

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Had a doctors appointment this morning. It went OK i guess. I saw the other doctor (not my regular doctor today), and I don’t like him quite as much. At least he didn’t have a med student with him this time…whenever he does I end up feeling like a lab experiment.

vitals: week 35 of 40, 166.5 lbs. belly size right where it should be.

April Snowshowers Bring Dead Flowers

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Sign of Spring?
The words from the WRVO weatherman were something like:

“Central New York is waking up to a Tulip Toppling, Daffodil Destroying, Crocus Crushing snowfall.”

He was right. Caz got over a foot of the heaviest, stickiest, wettest snow of the entire winter. We’ve had a few deeper snowfalls this past season, but none as snowblower clogging as this one. The alert reader might notice that I don’t generally post during the day, because I don’t generally post from work. Despite spending over an hour forcing the snowblower to move the snow out of the driveway, I did not get in to work.

Nursery Update 5 (+ family stuff)

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

The flooring is officially going in! Dad (S) and I installed a threshold at the nursery doorway and hand nailed the first four courses. The plan is to rent the floor nailer next week and Eric and I will put in the remaining flooring on Saturday.

Meanwhile we’ve gone from one packed house to another. Last weekend we were at my parents’ house in PA with my sister, Bro-in-law (aka H&J) and their 2 kids. This weekend we had my parents and H&J in last night. H&J were picking up a puppy from a local breeder (you will probably be able to read about that on her blog shortly) so they left this morning. K’s folks and G-Pa arrived this afternoon and are now in house for the night. A local shower (really brunch) is scheduled for tomorrow after church.

Church is going to be fun, because the 2 (and a half) of us will have 6 family members joining us for church. In addition, a friend from work and his family (2+2) may be joining us for the first time at our church. So in all 10 adults and 2(.5) kids. We’ll need to get there early to reserve a big chunk of space.
